I Wish I Could Have Been There
I’ve often wondered what drives a person to take their own life. We all face challenges, but what is the tipping point? Then I think about the people I see every day. Who among them might be nearing their breaking point? Instead of wasting time on small talk, what if we truly asked each other how we’re doing and what we need?
After a funeral or memorial service, we often reflect on the time lost and the unfinished business in both the life of the person who passed and our own lives. Don’t assume that someone is fine just because they smile or say they are “good”. Be the kind of friend who truly knows and understands the needs of others.
Monday Morning Blues
One morning, I was driving to the office and saw a young woman with her window down, listening to music at full blast. But she wasn’t singing along, mouthing the words, or doing a little “car dance” to the beat. She looked miserable. I thought, “What a terrible way to start the day…dreading life before work even begins.” I remembered jobs I’d had where the work felt never-ending, and sometimes the people I worked with weren’t exactly the sharpest knives in the drawer. But we always managed to get by, working harmoniously (if miserably), and covering for one another.
This also reminded me of one of my favorite movies, Joe vs. The Volcano (with Tom Hanks), where the monotony of the daily grind is exaggerated to hilarious effect. This song is for all the employees out there stuck in the grind with no end in sight.
In Love (again)
This song is about a couple that’s been in a relatioship for a long time and has fallen into a complacent routine. The singer longs to feel “in love” again…not just committed, but emotionally in love, like they used to be.
God Made Him a Cowboy
“What do you want to be when you grow up?” We’ve all heard this question countless times. Interestingly, few people end up in the profession they initially dreamed of. While I know one or two people who’ve followed their dreams from A to B, many of us take different paths. Sometimes, a child’s dream job might not even seem like a “real” profession to us. This song is for the kids who want to be cowboys!
Escape
Depression is a mentally and physically taxing thing to handle. Many times, I find I am learning the same “lesson” over and over. Sometimes we try to hide the depression from others not realizing that the only person being “fooled” is ourselves. Usually this is just a phase we have to face and deal with that will work itself out with time. Sympathy or empathy are not always wanted or helpful.
If you, or someone you know is dealing with chronic depression, please seek some resources for help.
